Hot Yoga studio aims for growth

A new hot yoga studio in Newport is aiming to double its classes as popularity grows.

Hot Yoga Health, near the city centre, launched recently and has a growing clientele.

Run by father and daughter team Geoff and Suzie Latham, the venture has 15 classes running every week, and the aim is to double this to 30 this year.

At present Hot Yoga Health has 5 yoga teachers and the plan is to increase the work force as the number of classes rises.

The business has taken over a former GP surgery in Baneswell, and refurbished it, providing a studio that can accommodate up to 30 people, changing rooms and parking. Treatment rooms are also available.

Classes take place at a temperature of 40 degrees, with 40% humidity. Air is pulled from outside the building, filtered, heated and then pumped into the studio. Stale air is then extracted.

“There is a constant supply of fresh, filtered air making a healthy environment,” said Geoff. “It means the atmosphere is warm and humid, but not oppressive.”

He says that apart from the well documented physical and mental benefits of yoga there are additional benefits of exercise at higher temperatures which  include warmer muscles for exercise, a thorough detox, better skin, much improved sleep, and a boost to the immune system and feelings of wellbeing.

“It also provides a cardiovascular workout, and the set sequence of postures enables measurable improvement week by week. Look and feel 10 years younger.”

A Start Up Business grant of £1500 has been provided to help the business get off the ground. The grant is administered jointly by Newport City Council and Tata Steel subsidiary UK Steel Enterprise.

Martin Palmer of UK Steel Enterprise said:“We are pleased to be able to support Hot Yoga Health, as they are not only providing a valuable service improving the health of people in Newport but also creating much needed jobs”

Councillor Mudd commented: “It’s great that we have been able to give assistance to another fantastic independent business near the heart of the city which is helping to improve people’s health and well-being. I wish Geoff and Suzie every success as they join a growing number of independent enterprises in Newport.”
